## Image size reference for Discord, Twitch, YouTube and more

29 dimensions across eight platforms in one place. Every value below carries the date it was last checked, and each section links to the platform's own documentation so you can confirm it yourself.

Most size guides give you a number and leave you to trust it. Platforms change their layouts, though, and a dimension that was right two years ago quietly becomes wrong. So this page does two things differently: it dates every entry, and it links to the source. Where a platform publishes a range instead of a fixed number, you get the range. Where something is a widely used convention rather than a platform rule, it says so.

All the values are also available as [machine-readable JSON](https://skinrender.com/specs.json) under a CC-BY licence, if you want to pull them into your own tool.

## What image sizes does Discord require?

| Asset | Upload size | Format | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Profile picture (avatar)** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/discord-pfp-maker) | 1024x1024 shown: 32-128px | PNG, JPG, GIF 1:1 | Rendered as a circle. Detail below roughly 4px of stroke disappears at 32px. |
| **Server icon** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/discord-server-icon) | 512x512 shown: 48 in server listpx | PNG, JPG, GIF 1:1 | Cropped to a circle by default, to a rounded square when hovered. |
| **Profile banner** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/social-resize) | 680x240 | PNG, JPG, GIF 17:6 | Requires Nitro. The avatar overlaps the lower left corner. |
| **Server invite splash** | 1920x1080 | PNG, JPG 16:9 | Shown behind the invite dialog; needs server boost level 1. |
| **Custom emoji** | 128x128 max 256 KB | PNG, GIF 1:1 | Discord downscales to 32px in chat, so thin outlines vanish. |

## What image sizes does Twitch require?

| Asset | Upload size | Format | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Profile picture** | 256x256 max 10 MB | PNG, JPG, GIF 1:1 | |
| **Profile banner** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/twitch-banner-maker) | 1200x480 max 10 MB | PNG, JPG 5:2 | |
| **Video player / offline banner** | 1920x1080 max 10 MB | PNG, JPG 16:9 | This is what viewers see when you are not live. |
| **Panel image** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/twitch-panel-maker) | 320 wide max 2.9 MB | PNG, JPG, GIF | Height is free; 320x100 keeps a panel row compact. |
| **Emote** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/twitch-emote-maker) | 112x112, 56x56, 28x28 max 1 MB per size | PNG 1:1 | All three sizes are required; a missing tier fails the upload. Transparency expected. |
| **Sub badge** | 72x72, 36x36, 18x18 | PNG 1:1 | Must stay legible at 18px, which rules out most detail. |

## What image sizes does YouTube require?

| Asset | Upload size | Format | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Channel art (banner)** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/youtube-banner-maker) | 2560x1440 safe: 1546x423 max 6 MB | PNG, JPG 16:9 | Only the 1546x423 centre is guaranteed visible on every device. Everything else is cropped on phones. |
| **Thumbnail** | 1280x720 max 2 MB | PNG, JPG, GIF 16:9 | Often displayed near 210x118 in feeds, so text under about 40px in the source is unreadable. |
| **Profile picture** | 800x800 shown: 98x98px | PNG, JPG 1:1 | Rendered as a circle. |
| **Video watermark** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/watermark-maker) | 150x150 max 1 MB | PNG 1:1 | Transparent PNG works best; it sits over the video. |

| **Square post** | 1080x1080 | PNG, JPG 1:1 | |
| **Portrait post** | 1080x1350 | PNG, JPG 4:5 | Portrait takes the most vertical space in feed. |
| **Story / Reel** | 1080x1920 | PNG, JPG 9:16 | Keep text roughly 250px from top and bottom to clear the interface. |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Base canvas** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/obs-scene-builder) | 1920x1080 | - 16:9 | Author overlays at canvas size. Authoring at 2560x1440 and downscaling softens thin lines. |
| **Full overlay** [Open the tool](https://skinrender.com/stream-overlay-maker) | 1920x1080 | PNG | Transparency required, otherwise it hides the gameplay. |
| **Webcam frame** | 480x270 to 640x360 | PNG 16:9 | Common sizes rather than a platform rule. *(common practice, not a platform rule)* |

## Common questions

### What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Upload 1024x1024px. Discord renders it between 32px and 128px depending on where it appears, and crops it to a circle.

The gap between upload size and display size is what catches people out. A design that looks sharp in the editor turns to mush in a member list. The practical test: shrink your avatar to 32px before you commit. If you cannot tell what it is, neither can anyone scrolling past it. Details thinner than roughly 4px of stroke at 1024px will not survive. Full breakdown in the [Discord PFP size guide](https://skinrender.com/discord-pfp-size), or build one in the [PFP maker](https://skinrender.com/discord-pfp-maker).

### What size is a Twitch banner?

The profile banner is 1200x480px. The video player and offline banner is 1920x1080px. Panels are 320px wide with free height.

Twitch uses the word "banner" for three different things, which is why answers online contradict each other. The one people usually mean is the profile banner at the top of the channel page. The offline banner is the separate 1920x1080 image viewers see when you are not streaming, and it is the one most channels forget to set. See the [Twitch banner size guide](https://skinrender.com/twitch-banner-size) or use the [banner maker](https://skinrender.com/twitch-banner-maker).

### Why does my YouTube banner look cropped?

Channel art is uploaded at 2560x1440px, but only the central 1546x423px area is guaranteed visible on every device.

Everything outside that centre strip gets cropped on phones and narrow desktop windows. TV displays show the full 2560x1440. So the working rule is: put your name, tagline and schedule inside the safe area, and treat the rest as background texture that some people will never see. The [banner maker](https://skinrender.com/youtube-banner-maker) draws the safe area for you.

### Why was my Twitch emote upload rejected?

Twitch requires all three sizes at once: 112x112, 56x56 and 28x28 PNG, each under 1MB. A missing size tier fails the whole upload.

Non-square images are rejected outright too. And because 28x28 is the size most viewers actually see in chat, an emote that only reads well at 112px is a wasted slot. Details in the [emote size guide](https://skinrender.com/twitch-emote-size); the [emote maker](https://skinrender.com/twitch-emote-maker) exports all three tiers in one go.

### What resolution should a stream overlay be?

Author it at your OBS base canvas size, normally 1920x1080px, and export as PNG with transparency.

Designing at 2560x1440 and letting OBS downscale sounds like it should give you more detail, but it softens thin lines and small text instead. Match the canvas exactly. See [OBS overlay sizing](https://skinrender.com/obs-overlay-size) or plan the layout in the [scene builder](https://skinrender.com/obs-scene-builder).

### How current are these numbers?

Every entry carries the date it was last checked against the platform's own documentation, shown under each table.

If you are reading this long after that date, treat the linked documentation as authoritative and let me know at [soulstrikedevs@gmail.com](mailto:soulstrikedevs@gmail.com) if something has drifted. Corrections get published and recorded in the [change feed](https://skinrender.com/changes.json).

## Tools that already use these dimensions

Every SkinRender tool exports at the sizes above by default, so you do not have to set them manually.

## Questions and answers

### What size should a Discord profile picture be?

Upload 1024x1024px. Discord renders it between 32px and 128px depending on where it appears, and crops it to a circle, so any detail thinner than about 4px of stroke disappears at the smallest size.

### What size is a Twitch banner?

The profile banner is 1200x480px. The video player and offline banner is 1920x1080px. Panels are 320px wide with free height. All accept PNG or JPG up to 10MB.

### Why does my YouTube banner look cropped?

Channel art is uploaded at 2560x1440px but only the central 1546x423px area is guaranteed visible on every device. Anything outside that safe area is cropped on phones and narrow desktop windows.

### Why was my Twitch emote upload rejected?

Twitch requires all three sizes: 112x112, 56x56 and 28x28 PNG, each under 1MB. A missing size tier fails the whole upload, and non-square images are rejected.

### What resolution should a stream overlay be?

Author it at your OBS base canvas size, normally 1920x1080px, and export as PNG with transparency. Designing at a larger size and downscaling softens thin lines and small text.

### How current are these dimensions?

Every value carries the date it was last checked against the platform's own documentation, and each platform section links to that documentation. Where a platform publishes a range rather than a single number, the range is reproduced instead of a single figure.
